Local knowledge to help make your stay in Robin Hood Country extra special
Walk 1: South Leverton & Treswell (3miles easy) South Leverton lies to the north of the county where the escarpment gives way to the River Trent. The walk crosses arable farmland using some medieval tracks between the villages with nature reserves and oil pumps!!. The village of South Leverton, mentioned in the Doomsday book, has a grand Norman church and many traditional Nottinghamshire buildings. In the centre of South Leverton is the public house called the Plough, park here or by the Village Hall in the Car Park opposite. From here take the lane beside the pub and follow it into the back of the churchyard. From the church come back onto the road. Directly opposite the old school was built over 300 years ago by a local benefactor and was the village school until the 1970's. Turn right down to the turning with the Retford Road. As a detour, a little further along on the right is a sculpture created in the shape of a plough made from local objects, a beam and bricks from an old farm and if you look closely you will see tiles inset, these were designed and made from local clay by all the villagers to celebrate the millennium.
Map of the route Back on the walk, head up Retford road to the junction where the road turns off right towards Retford and head straight on down the lane. Follow the lane on around the first left hand bend, then at the second take the track straight on. This track crosses fields and farmland before turning left into a lane that descends into the village of Treswell. At the T-junction with the tarmac lane turn right, continuing down before a steep upward pull through a wooded area and a T-junction with the main road. Turn left and head down through the village of Treswell past a left hand turn, then a right hand turn. After approximately 200yrds a track leaves the road on the left, crossing a stream and following a line of trees on its right. A nodding donkey oil pump can be seen on the left before the track turns sharply left then 200yrds further on sharply right. A nature reserve is on the left with an explanation board. Carry on along this medieval track that is nowadays made up from cinders from the nearby power stations, straight on when a track joins from the left and back into the village of South Leverton. When you reach the road turn left up through the village and back to your start. The Plough Inn makes an excellent journeys end, a quaint old traditional pub that serves a range of real ales though sadly no food.
