The group was very pleased to welcome Gregory Haan, a film maker from Germany currently making a film about schools in the UK which will be shown to thousands of children to schools all over Germany & a wider audience in Europe. He spoke to the ensemble about his filming in Thrumpton School and his observations of the differences between education systems. He outlined his local filming activities and it was discussed how this would raise the profile of Retford in Germany. He explained his connections through the Pilgrim Fathers and the museum connections through Holland and the US. His website is at www.fwu.de. His talk was most informative and thanks to Sandra for setting up the visit.

 

Action:            To liase with Gregory to create addition pages on the website to encompass the visit and the connections.  CPD

 

Membership fees, set at £20, are due for current year. It was pointed out the good value particularly for the website entry with the website receiving so many visitors. Sue reported that they get a good number of visitors to their Bed & Breakfast through the website. It was decided that from June, all those not paying would be removed from the site.

 

Action:            To follow up on those still required to pay.  JA

Geoff stood down as Chairman, a post that he has held for the last 3 years. Thanks were extended to him. He reported that there were no other nominations other than Chris, whom he proposed. John & Sue seconded the nomination. The meeting agreed the initiation. Chris thanked all present and said he would try to work hard on behalf of the club.

 

It was reported that the website was doing well. Over 60,000 hits were reported in May, an increase of 2.5 times on last year, and the site must be the largest on the web for North Notts.

 

Sue reported the changes to the Bassetlaw Council. Barry Bowles lost his seat in the local election, but will still have a connection with Experience Nottinghamshire. The new Community Prosperity department, headed by Keith Izzard, will cover tourism, economic development and planning, with Community Engagement for social services and local people activities.

 

A thanks was extended to Barry for his support of the group and an offer of invite to future meetings if he so desired.

It was agreed that the Clumber Park Meeting facility was excellent following the refit and thanks to be passed on to Anne.

A discussion took place on future meetings, times and activities. It was agreed to try an afternoon meeting, possibly to include lunch. In addition a program to be compiled for the next 6 meetings. Some ideas were discussed including a tour of the new training facility at Robin Hood Airport. A re-launch was to be progressed under new Chairmanship, with local press releases.

 Sandra reported that a new bus route was running from Retford & Worksop to the airport. This is a major step forward in bringing visitors from the airport into Retford & Worksop.

 

Sandra told the group about 2 new big announcements coming shortly from the airport, one involving a new route and the second on a large training company coming to the airport. Both will bring 100’s of jobs. For further details, members are to contact Sandra.

 

Chris closed the meeting and thanked those present.
