Creswell Crags

For thousands of years the caves at Creswell Crags have been linked to human occupation. This limestone gorge honeycombed with caves and fissures has been the location for archaeological finds of human life  dating back 50,000 years and is one of the most important sites in the world. Visitors have the chance to enjoy a range of activities designed to enrich our understanding of the lives of these early humans and a chance to explore their surroundings.

Creswell Crags and the Heritage Area is sandwiched between the Peak District National Park on the west and Robin Hood's Sherwood Forest on the east.

This area has been designated the Creswell Crags Heritage Area due to the concentration of Ice Age archaeological sites, mainly caves, which can be found in the valleys and cliff sided gorges. There are many more sites to explore including medieval towns and castles, country houses, rural stone built villages, rich industrial historic sites, as well as ancient woodlands and limestone grasslands. Connecting these sites are the gently rolling limestone hills with fields often bordered by dry stone walls.>>>
